Learning from Athletes: Moving On and Starting Over.
Career transitions aren’t just about changing jobs—they’re about reshaping who we are and finding new purpose.
For professional athletes, it’s inevitable that one day their playing career will end. No more floodlights, no crowd cheering from the stands. They have to find something new—something that gets them out of bed each morning after their athletic career is over.
I’ve been there myself. I’ve reinvented what I do a few times already. Each time was challenging, sometimes fearful, but also incredibly rewarding. The world is changing fast, and sometimes our roles become obsolete, or we just feel the need for something different.
The challenges athletes face are pretty similar to what many of us experience. So, here are some thoughts for anyone considering a change:
1. Stay Curious and Open-Minded
- Embrace New Ideas: Be open to opportunities you might not have considered before.
- Listen and Learn: Engage with a variety of people, and be willing to listen to their experiences and advice.
2. Redefine Your Identity
- Beyond Job Titles: You’re more than what your business card says. Dig deep to find what truly matters to you.
- Embrace Growth: Change can be intimidating, but it can also be exciting. See it as a chance to grow.
3. Explore Your Passions
- Self-Discovery: What have you always wanted to try? Now might be the perfect time.
- Continuous Learning: Pick up new skills or deepen existing ones. Learning keeps things fresh.
4. Leverage Transferable Skills
- Identify Your Strengths: Skills like communication, problem-solving, and adaptability are valuable everywhere.
- Tell Your Story: Your experiences have shaped you. Use them to your advantage in new endeavors.
5. Expand Your Network
- Connect Authentically: Reach out to people in different fields. You never know where a conversation might lead.
- Seek Mentorship: Find those who’ve walked a similar path and learn from them.
6. Start Taking Action
- Small Steps: Dip your toes into new waters. Maybe it’s a side project or volunteering.
- Step Outside Your Comfort Zone: That’s where growth happens.
In our rapidly changing world, transitioning isn’t the exception—it’s becoming the norm. Whether it’s by choice or necessity, embracing the opportunity to start anew can lead to great things.
