The Pivot: Playing the Infinite Game of Business.

When I started my first company, I thought success was about mastering the plan—sticking to it, executing flawlessly, and arriving at that perfect destination.

But here’s the thing about business: it’s not a finite game. There’s no championship trophy, no clock that runs out. Business is infinite, and staying in the game is the real win.

Over the years, I’ve come to realize one truth: the ability to pivot (at the right time) is one of the most crucial skills in business.

Here’s an example from my own journey: One of my ventures was selling mobile phone cases. That business showed me the incredible potential of mobile (around 2009), but it also taught me how cash-intensive physical products can be. So, I pivoted and started building a mobile app development agency instead. Same industry, new perspective—and much more successful and fun.

The lesson? In an infinite game, you don’t win by reaching a finish line. You win by staying curious, adaptable, and open to reinvention.

I like how Simon Sinek puts it: “Finite players play to beat the people around them. Infinite players play to be better than themselves.” That’s where the magic happens—not in defeating the competition, but in constantly evolving and staying relevant.

Another pivot got me into football. But that is for another post.

New pieces go out by mail first.
